Parents Weekend activities abound

Parents Weekend 2002 will take place Nov. 8-10 on the SU campus. Some of the highlights of weekend include the activities listed below. For more comprehensive information, contact the Parents Office at 443-1200 or visit .

  • Family Workout    The Department of Recreation Services opens the Archbold/Flanagan gymnasium complex to parents and siblings with free, unlimited use for the weekend from 6:30 a.m-2 a.m Friday, 9:30 a.m.-2 a.m. Saturday and 11:30 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Sunday. Recreation Services will also offer its Parents Weekend version of a year-round staple, Late Night at the Gym. An open skate at the Marilyn and William Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion will take place from 11 a.m.-1 a.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-1 a.m. Saturday and noon-10 p.m. Sunday.
  •     The Parents’ Place Hospitality Suite is open Friday from noon-7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. The Panasci Lounge is registration headquarters for Parents Weekend 2002. Up-to-the-minute information on events, schedule adjustments and locations is available, as well as memorabilia and refreshments.
  • Take Your Parents to Class    From 2-5 p.m. Friday, a variety of classroom experiences for parents will take place. Among the faculty members featured will be Joanna Masingila, associate professor of mathematics; David H. Bennett, Meredith Professor for Teaching Excellence and professor of history; Douglas P. Biklen, professor of cultural foundations of education; Joseph Downing, associate dean/associate professor in the School of Music; Susan Bonzi, associate professor of information management and technology; William Banks, professor of law; and Shobha Bhatia, Meredith Professor for Teaching Excellence and professor of civil and environmental engineering.     Presentations from 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Saturday will include Kristi J. Andersen, Meredith Professor for Teaching Excellence and professor of political science; William D. Coplin, professor and chair of the public affairs department; Lawrence J. Lewandowski, Meredith Professor for Teaching Excellence and professor of psychology; and Lawrence Mason, professor of visual and interactive communication.
  • Searching for Outside Scholarships    On Friday from 3-5 p.m, this program will include information on the services provided by the scholarship programs office. Those attending will learn about the SU Scholar Listserv, how to effectively use the Internet, how to spot scholarship frauds and other useful tips.
  • Meet the Chancellor and Mrs. Shaw    From 4-5 p.m. Friday and 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Chancellor Kenneth A. Shaw and Mary Ann Shaw, associate of the Chancellor, will meet and greet parents at the Parents’ Place Hospitality Suite.
  • The Official ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Ring Ceremony will take place Friday from 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m. at the Chancellor’s Residence and will include parents of junior and senior students who purchased the new ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ official ring in September. They will have their ring presented to them by the Chancellor and Mrs. Shaw. The official ring is a symbol of the students’ ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ memories and experiences and recognizes their accomplishments.    Other Parents Weekend events include presentations of “Jitney” at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Stage and “Evita” at the Goldstein Auditorium in the Schine Student Center, a pre-game tailgate party, a Career Services Network Open House, residence hall activities, Pride of the Orange pre-game performance, ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Orangemen vs. Virginia Tech Hokies football game, an A Cappella Afternoon, Women’s Volleyball vs. Notre Dame, a Family Affair Reception sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, An Evening of Jewish Music, Cabaret at Crouse, and the Black Celestial Choral Ensemble in concert at Hendricks Chapel.    On Sunday, there will be a variety of options for good food before parents head home, including a bagel breakfast at the Hillel Lounge and continental breakfast following each morning Mass at the Alibrandi Catholic Center. An interdenominational worship service with special music by the Hendricks Chapel Choir and Handbell Ringers will also take place.
