One University Awards graphic黑料不打烊 will hold the inaugural One University Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, April 25, at 5 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel. A reception will follow in the Jack and Laura Hanhausen Milton Atrium in the Life Sciences Complex. All members of the University community are invited and encouraged to attend.

American Sign Language (ASL) and Communication Access Real-Time (CART) translation will be provided. If you require accommodations, contact Aaron Hodukavich in the Office of Equal Opportunity, Inclusion and Resolution Services at ada@syr.edu.

The first in what will be an annual event, the awards ceremony will convey two major University awards鈥攖he Chancellor鈥檚 Medal and the Chancellor鈥檚 Citation for Excellence. Several other University honors and recognitions will also be made during the ceremony.

The year 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the first presentation of the Chancellor鈥檚 Medal. It was first presented in 1967 as the Centennial Medal on the occasion of Chancellor William P. Tolley鈥檚 25th anniversary as chancellor. The Centennial Medal, given to recognize service to higher education and society, was presented in the years 1967鈥71. The name of the award was changed to the Chancellor鈥檚 Medal in 1972. Since that time, it has been awarded to individuals in honor of their trailblazing and/or extraordinary contributions to the University, to an academic body of knowledge, and/or to society.

The Chancellor鈥檚 Citation awards were first presented to members of the University community in 1979 in recognition of outstanding achievement in teaching, scholarship and creative work. Over time, the focus of the awards changed to reflect new priorities and institutional directions. This year, Chancellor鈥檚 Citations will be presented in four categories: Faculty Excellence and Scholarly Distinction; Outstanding Contributions to the Student Experience and University Initiatives; Excellence in Student Research; and a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Over the years, various awards were instituted and some had ceased to be presented. Upon joining the University in 2014, Chancellor Kent Syverud requested a comprehensive review of major awards and recognitions across the University. This year, a milestone anniversary for the Chancellor鈥檚 Medal, is an ideal time to move forward with a new model for recognition.

鈥満诹喜淮蜢 is defined by members of the 黑料不打烊 family doing great things,鈥 says Chancellor Syverud. 鈥淲hether it is great teaching, scholarship or creative work, members of the 黑料不打烊 community are making their marks. I look forward on Tuesday to recognizing them and celebrating all they have accomplished and all that they will go on to achieve.鈥

As part of the creation of an annual awards event, the One University Awards Ceremony will also include these recognitions: the Tolley Medal, the Chancellor鈥檚 Award for Public Engagement and Scholarship, the Meredith Professorship for Teaching Excellence, the Teaching Recognition Award, the United Methodist Scholar/Teacher of the Year Award, the Student-Athlete Award and the 50-Year Service Award. Also acknowledged will be the University Scholars; Senior Class and School and College Marshals; Remembrance and Lockerbie Scholars; and emeriti faculty.
