Trans Week of Liberation (TWoL) is an annual awareness shift from November’s Trans Day of Remembrance, which honors the lives lost to acts of violence, to March’s weeklong liberation celebration.
Geena Rocero is the TWoL commemorative keynote and will speak on Thursday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m. in 214 Slocum Hall.
The TWoL Commemorative Keynote is Thursday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m. in 214 Slocum. Sharing her journey with ϲ is Geena Rocero, a Filipina-American model, producer, and transgender advocate. Since speaking at TED in March 2014 where she came out as a trans woman, Rocero has spoken at the White House, United Nations, and countless universities around the country on trans rights and elevating the visibility of the trans community in the media. Rocero is the founder of , an advocacy and aid organization that stands up for the rights of transgender people worldwide to “self-identify with the fewest possible barriers.” American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation and Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) will be available. “The approaching Trans Week of Liberation brings many opportunities to celebrate and affirm trans experiences, identities and communities and to showcase our campus community’s and the broader off-campus community. We are especially honored to welcome Geena Rocero as the commemorative keynote,” says khristian kemp-delisser, director at the LGBT Resource Center. “We look forward to exploring the visibility of the trans community in the media during her keynote, while also sparking campus conversation and action toward trans liberation through our weeklong events.”
On Tuesday, March 26, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in 304 Tolley, the LGBT Studies Program and Minor in partnership with the LGBT Resource Center are hosting a workshop and discussion with Marquis Bey. A Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellow, Ph.D. candidate from Cornell, lecturer at ϲ, and soon-to-be assistant professor of African American Studies and English at Northwestern University, Bey will initiate a discussion about trans subjectivity as a mode of disrupting hegemonic gender, particularly as it relates to feminist Blackness, as a jumping off place for a discussion of Trans Studies. Additional events throughout the week include a Trans 101 workshop on Monday, March 25, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., a closed-group social for people who identify as trans, nonbinary, genderqueer, gender nonconforming or gender questioning on Wednesday, March 27, from 6 to 9 p.m., and a clothing swap mixer on Friday, March 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. These events will be hosted at the LGBT Resource Center, 548 Bird Library. Clothing donations can be dropped off throughout the week at the LGBT Resource Center, Schine Student Center atrium and Hendricks Chapel.
