Campus Vending Machines to Accept New Payment Options, Including Credit Cards, Apple Pay

Beginning the week of Nov. 18, members of the campus community will be able to use credit cards and mobile pay apps at 10 vending machines in Bird Library. The new payment capabilities will gradually expand to all 175 campus vending machines throughout the next year.

In addition to SUpercard FOOD funds and credit cards, the machines will now accept Apple Pay, Google Wallet and Android Pay. Purchasers should look for a new orange vending sticker placed on the machines, which will identify the acceptable forms of payment.

The upgrades are the first part of a larger effort to expand new payment capabilities across campus, says Mark Romano, the director of information technology in Auxiliary Services. The University currently has over 400 points of sale, including 265 at the Dome, and the goal is to expand the convenience of mobile payments to as many as possible.

“This is the first step of an ongoing effort to upgrade our point of sale systems across the University,” says Romano. “We know that students appreciate the convenience of mobile pay, and we plan to first introduce it in high-traffic areas, such as Pages Café and the Bookstore.”
