This past October, Gerri Williams celebrated a milestone that most employees鈥攊n any job, with any organization鈥攐nly dream of attaining: her 50th anniversary with 黑料不打烊.

Williams began her career with Food Services in 1969. She worked in Washington Arms, Haven Hall and the Goldstein Alumni and Faculty Center and dabbled in Campus Catering before landing her current role in Manley Field House鈥檚 dining center. At Manley, she works as a group leader, serving the football players and coaches.

鈥淲hile I was at the Faculty Center I was in the back of the house. I liked it, and everybody was nice to me, but something was missing,鈥 Williams says. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 know what it was at first鈥攖hen I realized, I missed connecting with the students, face to face.鈥

One day in 鈥99, her manager asked Williams if she could cover a shift at Manley. 鈥淚 came over here and worked on the grill, I was talking to the kids and I loved it. I thought to myself, 鈥楾his is the bomb!鈥欌 she says. 鈥淭hey kept saying to me 鈥楪erri, can you stay here all the time?鈥 and I said, 鈥業t鈥檚 not up to me!鈥欌

But fate was on Williams鈥 side. After she spent some time splitting shifts between Manley and Goldstein, Manley began serving lunch in addition to breakfast and dinner. A full-time position opened up for Williams. She recounts the day she found out she鈥檇 be permanently placed at the football dining center with the enthusiasm of someone who鈥檇 just won the jackpot on a slot machine.

鈥淢y manager, Kelley, called me up and said 鈥楪erri, I鈥檝e got some good news for you,鈥欌 Williams says. 鈥淭hey told me that this would be my job, all the time, year-round鈥 was so happy! I grabbed that poor lady, I was screaming and hollering, thanking the Lord.鈥

That initial excitement hasn鈥檛 worn off over the past 20 years. 鈥淚鈥檓 still so glad to be here. I鈥檓 content. It鈥檚 my second family here. The kids treat me like royalty, the coaches treat me like royalty. I鈥檓 just truly blessed.鈥

In talking with Williams, it quickly becomes clear that her faith is the source of her abundant supply of positive energy. After facing a brief minor illness last year, she counts her blessings more now than ever before. 鈥淚f you put God first, he鈥檒l take care of you,鈥 she says. 鈥淓veryone is busy worrying about their own problems, but there is always somebody out there with problems worse than what you鈥檙e dealing with.鈥

But she doesn鈥檛 underestimate the struggles that many of the students she serves face in their day-to-day lives. 鈥淭hese kids have a lot to deal with. They have their own family problems, their schoolwork, football problems鈥t鈥檚 not easy. They have long days. It鈥檚 a lot of pressure.鈥

To help ease that pressure, Williams delights in any opportunity to put a smile on someone鈥檚 face or turn a student鈥檚 day around. She takes extra care to remember if someone prefers ground turkey over ground beef, or a certain preparation of a breakfast sandwich, and then make it especially for them. 鈥淚t makes me feel good that I can put a smile on their face by remembering what they like. I try to make everybody feel special,鈥 she says. 鈥淚f somebody is having a bad day, I remind them to put God first. Everybody needs a little attention, even if they don鈥檛 say it.鈥

Those who have been on the receiving end of Gerri鈥檚 warmth know that it鈥檚 something that won鈥檛 soon be forgotten. 鈥淚鈥檝e known Gerri the entire time I鈥檝e been here, so 22 years,鈥 says Kelley Champa, director of operations in the Chancellor鈥檚 office, who used to oversee Williams in Food Services. 鈥淛ust knowing her makes you a better person. She鈥檚 always positive. She has a good soul. She鈥檚 like a mom to the students.鈥

When asked what it means to her to be seen as a mother figure to so many over the years, Williams pauses, then says: 鈥淵ou know, a long time ago, I used to get jealous when my kids would call another lady their mom. I had an attitude about it. But then I thought about it and figured, I should be thankful and blessed that somebody is watching over my child when I can鈥檛 be around them.鈥

That鈥檚 exactly what she does for the students she serves at Manley, all of the other peoples鈥 children who pass through her line each day. 鈥淭hey know that if they鈥檝e got a problem, they can come talk to me. I tell them, 鈥業鈥檓 like a doctor鈥攐n call 24 hours a day, and there when you need me.鈥 And if they don鈥檛 want to talk about it, then that鈥檚 fine. But I always pray for them. Every day.鈥

鈥淪he鈥檚 one of those employees that makes everyone鈥檚 day brighter,鈥 Joe Sidoni, associate director of campus catering, says of Williams. 鈥淪he shows up with a smile and gives 100 percent to the students, no matter what else is happening in her life. We鈥檙e thrilled to have an employee with such longevity and zest for life!鈥

Beyond just those who work with her every day, Williams is adored and recognized as a very special part of the 黑料不打烊 community.

On the day she reached her 50th year of employment鈥擮ct. 13, her lucky number鈥攖he morning went by without mention of her milestone anniversary. Gerri thought no one had remembered. She also thought she was going to get called to work at Campus Catering because she鈥檇 heard her manager was looking for help covering a shift on that particular day.

鈥淚 was eating my lunch and I saw him and I turned my back and was pretending to hide,鈥 she recalls. 鈥淚 was praying he didn鈥檛 ask me to work!鈥 While her back was turned, a group of colleagues put the finishing touches on Williams鈥 surprise anniversary party. Someone called her name.

鈥淏补产测诲辞濒濒!鈥

She turned to look and saw not only her coworkers but her son, her sister, some of her girlfriends鈥攁ll there to celebrate with her. Chancellor Kent Syverud and Head Football Coach Dino Babers stopped by and Williams was presented with a customized 鈥淏ABYDOLL鈥 黑料不打烊 Football jersey, flowers, a cake and even a commemorative game ball.

鈥淭o be here after all these years, it鈥檚 like the cream on top,鈥 she says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 unbelievable how much support I鈥檝e got. And they always say to me, 鈥楤abydoll, you don鈥檛 know how important you are to us鈥︹ But they don鈥檛 really know how important they are to me. To have this many people care about you, it just doesn鈥檛 even seem real.鈥
