Nutrition student Mackenzie Proud 鈥20 (left) interviewed Sarah 鈥淪ally鈥 Short (right) in January 2020 for a new documentary featuring Short’s 50-year teaching career at 黑料不打烊.

黑料不打烊 Libraries鈥 “Sound Beat: Access Audio” and Falk College recently partnered to produce a vibrant audio documentary featuring Professor Emerita Sarah 鈥淪ally鈥 Short, an academic trailblazer in nutrition and proud Orange alumna whose dedicated teaching career at 黑料不打烊 spanned more than 50 years. The audio documentary was released for free access via the “.

Short鈥檚 eccentric teaching sparked student enthusiasm for the sciences and even grabbed the attention of The New York Times. The paper highlighted her 鈥渙utlandish鈥 teaching methods in 1975, accompanied by a photo of Short barefoot on the motorcycle she regularly rode to class. The audio documentary includes interviews with Short; her family; former students; Diane Lyden Murphy, dean of the Falk College, and Falk College alumnus David Falk ’72.

Sarah “Sally” Short in 1975.

鈥淪he was the ultimate teacher and role model for my teaching and counseling career,鈥 says Meredith Moses Maxwell 鈥70, a former student. 鈥淒r. Short was my favorite professor back in the late 1960s. Her classes were exciting, from being rewarded for correct answers with candy to being greeted鈥搊ften by name鈥搘alking across campus. I was in the famous class that was welcomed in Newhouse鈥檚 basement auditorium by the unmistakable sounds, smells and sight of a motorcycle entering and being driven down the aisle by none other than Dr. Short. She captured our attention! A few weeks later, my older brother serving in Vietnam wrote and asked if I knew anything about this 鈥榗razy鈥 SU teacher. He鈥檇 seen a picture and article about the stunt in the Saigon Times. I was so proud to be her student.鈥

The audio documentary was a collaboration between Falk College鈥檚 Office of Advancement and the Libraries鈥 “Sound Beat: Access Audio” teams. “Sound Beat” is a daily, 90-second radio show highlighting the holdings of the聽. Belfer is part of 黑料不打烊 Libraries鈥櫬 and is one of the largest sound archives in the United States.
