黑料不打烊 Stage Comes 鈥楬ome for the Holidays鈥

Department of Drama黑料不打烊 Stage

celebrates the joy and comfort of home this holiday season with the fully digital production a heartwarming show filled with favorite songs and instrumental music, dancing and fond memories, available as video on demand starting Dec. 15.

The show is directed and devised by Ricky Pak, who this year joined the faculty of the Department of Drama. Experienced as a teaching artist with the New York-based Tectonic Theatre Project, Pak is well versed in devising original theater works using personal stories and other material. He will call on his experience to create 鈥淗ome for the Holidays.鈥

Pak describes 鈥淗ome for the Holidays鈥 as: 鈥淎n evening of holiday songs and storytelling all inspired by real-life interviews gathered from 黑料不打烊 Stage cast members, past and present; 黑料不打烊 Drama students who were originally cast in 鈥楳iss Bennet;鈥 and several longtime 黑料不打烊 Stage patrons. This show will be a mix of storytelling and musical performances exploring the theme of what 鈥楬ome for the Holidays鈥 means to all of us.鈥

鈥淗ome for the Holidays鈥 replaces the previously announced 鈥淢iss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley,鈥 which was removed from the season line-up due to recently heightened rehearsal and performance restrictions implemented by the union for professional actors and stage managers (Actors鈥 Equity Association) in response to the steady increase of COVID-19 cases in Central New York. 鈥淗ome for the Holidays鈥 will be produced in an innovative way so that the cast can rehearse and perform without having to be together in the same space.

鈥淭his past year has certainly been a roller coaster of ups and downs and unexpected twists and turns, but through it all we鈥檝e been committed to finding innovative and engaging ways to continue our work as 黑料不打烊鈥檚 storytellers,鈥 says Artistic Director Bob Hupp. 鈥溾楬ome for the Holidays鈥 highlights what this special time of year means to us now. For the past several years, we鈥檝e created holiday experiences for you to share with the entire family. We鈥檙e continuing that tradition now with a unique and personal theatrical celebration that I know you鈥檒l enjoy.鈥

Helping Pak with the musical numbers and also appearing in the show ensconced behind a baby grand piano is music director Brian Cimmet. Cimmet is very familiar to 黑料不打烊 Stage audiences having served as musical director for the holiday shows for many seasons, including most recently 鈥淒isney鈥檚 Beauty and the Beast,鈥 鈥淓lf the Musical,鈥 鈥淭he Wizard of Oz,鈥 鈥淒isney and Cameron Mackintosh鈥檚 Mary Poppins鈥 and many more.

The cast, too, includes some familiar faces. David Lowenstein has appeared in many 黑料不打烊 Stage holiday productions, including 鈥淎 Christmas Carol,鈥 鈥淗airspray鈥 (Edna), 鈥淭he Wizard of Oz,鈥 鈥淓lf the Musical,鈥 and 鈥淒isney鈥檚 Beauty and the Beast鈥 (Cogsworth).聽 Joining Lowenstein are 鈥淏eauty and the Beast鈥 castmate Cicily Daniels (Mrs. Potts) and Lisa Helmi Johanson, who appeared in 鈥淎madeus鈥 as Mozart鈥檚 wife, Constanze. Daniels has appeared in four Broadway shows: 鈥淥nce on this Island,鈥 鈥淭he Little Mermaid鈥 (original understudy for Ursula), 鈥淎ll Shook Up,鈥 and 鈥淩ent.鈥 Among Johanson鈥檚 credits are the off-Broadway and National Tour of 鈥淎venue Q鈥 and the National Tour of 鈥淚nto the Woods.鈥

New to 黑料不打烊 Stage is Rufus Bonds Jr., who is also a newly appointed member of the Department of Drama faculty. Bonds鈥 considerable career includes Broadway productions of 鈥淩ent,鈥 鈥淥nce on This Island,鈥 and 鈥淧arade,鈥 for which he earned a Drama Desk Nomination for Best Supporting Actor. His national tours include 鈥淭he Color Purple鈥 as Mister, 鈥淭he Lion King鈥 as Mufasa and 鈥淢iss Saigon鈥 as John.

Pak said he has found the process of creating the show to be rewarding.

鈥淲e have been having conversations with various members of the 黑料不打烊 Stage community, getting to know their holiday traditions and memories,鈥 he says. 鈥淲e鈥檝e laughed and cried with them, sharing in their memories and learning about what is truly important to each of them as we enter the holiday season. The students and I then met, along with our musical director Brian Cimmet, to talk about what parts of the interviews resonate with us and how we can craft a story from what we have learned. We see the commonalities and differences we have in our stories and find the thread that links us all together.鈥

Finding unity and togetherness is the spirit Pak hopes carries through to the audience.

鈥淲e are hoping to quite literally open our homes to the audience with the stories and music we are sharing and that we can only share in this way because of the pandemic,鈥 he says. 鈥淚t will be a uniquely intimate show full of laughter and tears that connects us during these historically challenging times.鈥

To access 鈥淗ome for the Holidays,鈥 patrons need only a valid e-mail address and a device for viewing, such as a desktop, laptop, smart TV or tablet. 鈥淭ickets鈥 are $30 and are available at and through the Box Office (315.443.3275; Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.).
