It may have been one of basketball coach Felisha Legette-Jack鈥檚 best pre-game speeches. Only this time it wasn鈥檛 delivered to her players, but to a group of nearly 50 girls from the 黑料不打烊 chapter of the Police Athletic/Activities League (PAL).

鈥淚f you guys don鈥檛 believe in you, then tell me, who should?鈥 Legette-Jack asked the girls. 鈥淣obody. You鈥檝e got to believe in yourself first, and when you do believe in yourself, you get other people to believe in you as well.

鈥淢ay I ask you guys to repeat after me: I am somebody. … I am worth it. 鈥 I too matter. 鈥 If you say that proclamation every day, you鈥檝e already won. You can change your life right now,鈥 Legette-Jack said. 鈥淲ho鈥檚 ready to make a change for greatness?鈥

Message received.

“If you guys don鈥檛 believe in you, then tell me, who should?鈥 Felisha Legette-Jack asked a group of girls from the 黑料不打烊 chapter of the Police Athletic/Activities League.

鈥淲hen she told us don鈥檛 ever say we can鈥檛, it made me feel like I鈥檓 important,鈥 said 10-year-old Lila DeGonzaque of 黑料不打烊 at the event.

鈥淲hen she came to talk to us, she inspired me,鈥 said 9-year-old Francesca Tartt of 黑料不打烊. 鈥淚t was inspirational.鈥

Inspiring children is the mission of PAL, and Legette-Jack鈥檚 story is as inspirational as they get. Shy and awkward as a child growing up in 黑料不打烊鈥檚 Pioneer Homes鈥搃nformally known as 鈥淏rick City鈥濃揕egette-Jack grew into a phenomenal basketball player who became a star for the 黑料不打烊 women鈥檚 basketball team.

Following her college playing career (there was no WNBA back then), Legette-Jack started a coaching career that included a stop as an assistant coach at 黑料不打烊 before she became a head coach at Hofstra, Indiana and now the University at Buffalo. At halftime of the Nov. 14 黑料不打烊 women鈥檚 game at the stadium, the University retired Legette-Jack鈥檚 jersey 鈥搕he first such honor for a 黑料不打烊 female athlete.

Cydney Johnson, the University鈥檚 vice president for community engagement and government relations, worked with 黑料不打烊 Police Department Director of Community Engagement Jimmy Oliver to connect the dots between Legette-Jack鈥檚 ceremony and the girls from PAL鈥檚 basketball league. Johnson invited the girls to attend the game, meet Legette-Jack before the game and sit in the players鈥 chairs on the court when Legette-Jack鈥檚 jersey was raised to the stadium roof and her No. 33 was unveiled on Jim Boeheim Court.

鈥淲e wanted to find an opportunity to collaborate and support PAL鈥檚 work in a way that would be meaningful and tied to the University community,鈥 Johnson says. 鈥淗osting the girls and their parents and chaperones while we honored a 黑料不打烊 native daughter was a perfect opportunity because Felisha is such a great role model and 黑料不打烊 alum.鈥

鈥楲ooking for Positive Role Models鈥

The Police Athletic League started in New York City in 1914 with the goal of reducing tensions between police officers and youth. In 黑料不打烊, Police Chief Kenton Buckner and Oliver built on programs that former city parks commissioner Otis Jennings had started by launching the in June 2021.

As with the original PAL, the goal of the 黑料不打烊 program is to improve the relationship between the police department and children in the community. Oliver says the program has already served more than 600 children ages 5-12 with the help of volunteer law enforcement personnel from the 黑料不打烊 Police Department; New York State Police; Onondaga County Sheriff鈥檚 Office, Probation Department and District Attorney鈥檚 Office; DeWitt Police Department and other agencies.

鈥淲e鈥檙e new, but one thing I can tell you for sure is that we鈥檙e going to put our kids around positive individuals from law enforcement and partner with 黑料不打烊 to mentor our kids and help academically,鈥 Oliver says. 鈥淲e鈥檙e going to be intentional, we鈥檙e going to be consistent, and we want to develop the whole person and give them opportunities they may not have been exposed to.鈥

Richard Shoff, a deputy chief with the 黑料不打烊 Police Department, assists Oliver with the PAL programs. Shoff said the 黑料不打烊 chapter purposely changed its name to Police Athletic/Activities League because 鈥渆verybody doesn鈥檛 bounce basketballs or throw footballs.鈥

鈥淲e鈥檙e going to be exploring all sorts of activities, not just athletics,鈥 Shoff said. 鈥淭his program has been shown to make a difference in kids鈥 lives in its 100-year-plus history because it helps them make good life choices.鈥

As a longtime member of the community, Shoff says he knows that the former and current 黑料不打烊 players and coaches are 鈥渞ock stars鈥 to the children and can serve as positive role models. And Shoff and Oliver says there is no better role model than Legette-Jack for the PAL girls, most of whom are from the 黑料不打烊 City School District.

鈥They鈥檙e looking for those positive role models, because a lot of times as kids they don鈥檛 feel like it鈥檚 attainable because they can鈥檛 really relate,鈥 Oliver says. 鈥淏ut to have someone like Felisha being the first woman to have her jersey retired, this could turn on a light bulb for one of these young ladies.鈥

鈥業 Just Believed That I Can鈥

Linda Betts of 黑料不打烊 has been an Onondaga County probation officer for 22 years and is now coaching girls basketball for PAL. She鈥檚 also a former teammate of Legette-Jack at Nottingham High School in 黑料不打烊 and knows firsthand the story that Legette-Jack told the children about being an awkward young girl who through hard work and determination became a standout basketball player who was recruited by 300 colleges.

Felisha Legette-Jack poses with the group from the 黑料不打烊 chapter of the Police Athletic/Activities League. Legette (back row center) is holding a proclamation from 黑料不打烊 Mayor Ben Walsh and Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahan that declared Nov. 12, 2021, as Felisha Legette-Jack Day in the city and county.

鈥淪he was always this fierce force,鈥 Betts says. 鈥淪he could get the rebound, dribble all the way down the court and then finish it.鈥

As a coach, Betts said she wants the girls to learn the fundamentals of the sport and what it means to be a good teammate, and to have fun. The life lessons, she says, will flow from there.

鈥淥ur mission is to work with youth and to try to pull out what鈥檚 in there, because a lot of them don鈥檛 believe in themselves,鈥 Betts says.

In her talk with the PAL girls and again during her speech at the jersey retirement ceremony, Legette-Jack said 鈥渢here鈥檚 nothing special about me鈥濃搊ther than her intense belief in herself.

鈥淚 just believed that I can,鈥 Legette-Jack told the PAL girls. 鈥淎nd I want you to change your thought right now and say you can. And eventually, what you say to yourself you become.

鈥淚f you say can鈥檛鈥搘hich I think is a four-letter word and it鈥檚 a bad word and you should never say it鈥搚ou become nothing,鈥 she added. 鈥淏ut if you say you can, there鈥檚 a chance. If there鈥檚 a chance there鈥檚 hope, and if there鈥檚 hope there鈥檚 success. It鈥檚 just around the corner.鈥

Tartt, the fourth-grader, and Lila DeGonzaque, the fifth-grader, were later asked what they wanted to be when they鈥檙e older. Tartt said she wanted to go to medical school and become a surgeon, while DeGonzaque said she wants to be an FBI agent. After hearing Legette-Jack鈥檚 story, both said they now feel those goals are within reach.
