Architect Brad Cloepfil, founding principal of Allied Works Architecture, a leading architecture and design firm based in Portland, Ore. and New York City, will speak at the ϲ on Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 5 p.m. in Slocum Hall Auditorium. His lecture, “Occupation,” is free and open to the public.

cloepfilCloepfil studied architecture at the University of Oregon and received his master’s of architecture at Columbia University. Recently, he was named a “2011 Face to Watch in the Arts” by architecture critic Christopher Hawthorne of the Los Angeles Times, and Terence Riley, former chief curator of architecture and design at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, identified Cloepfil as an architect who is “setting the pace for the future.”

After Cloepfil established Allied Works Architecture in 1994, the firm quickly developed a strong reputation through projects such as the Wieden+Kennedy Agency World Headquarters, an adaptive re-use of an historic warehouse in Portland. Completion of the firm’s first major free-standing public building, the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (2003), garnered international acclaim. Recent projects include: the Booker T. Washington High School for Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas (2008), noted as one of the top North American schools by Architype Review for its innovation in typology; the re-design of 2 Columbus Circle for the Museum of Arts and Design (2008); the AIA award-winning renovation and expansion for the University of Michigan Museum of Art; and a feature animation facility for Pixar Animation Studios (under construction).

In 2009, Allied Works Architecture won the international competition to create the National Music Centre of Canada, an institution dedicated to the music of Canada in all of its forms. In May 2011, the firm will release its first book, “Allied Works Architecture Brad Cloepfil: Occupation” (Gregory Miller Books, USA; Hatje Cantz, Europe and Asia).
