Melvin T. Stith, dean of the at ���ϲ�����, announces that J. Michael “Mike” Haynie has been named the Barnes Professor of Entrepreneurship, in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments in teaching, research and service. Haynie was previously the Barnes Fellow.

Haynie holds a Ph.D. in entrepreneurship and strategic management from the Leeds College of Business at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He joined the Whitman School in 2006 as an assistant professor of entrepreneurship. His research—focused on investigating entrepreneurial decision-making, identity and cognition—has been presented at top entrepreneurship conferences and published in the leading business and entrepreneurship journals.

In 2007, Haynie founded the at Whitman, which opens the door to business ownership to America’s veterans by providing cutting-edge, experiential training in entrepreneurship and small-business management to servicemen and women disabled as a result of their military service. The EBV program is now offered through a network of world-class business schools, that, in addition to SU, includes the Anderson School of Management at UCLA, the College of Business at Florida State University, the Mays School of Business at Texas A&M University, the Krannert School at Purdue University, the School of Business at the University of Connecticut and the E.J. Ourso College of Business at Louisiana State University. In 2009, EBV was recognized as a “National Best Practice” by the Department of the Army for serving soldiers and their families, and in 2011 was selected by the editors of Inc. Magazine as one of the 10 best entrepreneurship programs in the nation.

In 2010, the EBV portfolio expanded to include the , an education and training program offered by Whitman and FSU’s College of Business. EBV-F leverages the flexibility inherent in small-business ownership to provide a vocational and economic path forward for military family members who are now caregivers to a wounded warrior, or for the surviving spouse of a military member who gave his or her life in service to our country.

In the past year, Haynie has also developed and launched new programs aimed at veteran entrepreneurship in cooperation with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), to complement veteran outreach efforts of the Department of Defense. These programs include , an intensive, conference-style training program for women veterans of any branch and era of military service and active-duty military who want to leverage business ownership as they transition from military to civilian life, which held its inaugural session in San Antonio in May; and , an eight-week, online course for National Guard and reserve members, their families and business partners focused on the fundamentals of launching and growing a small business, for those who will sustain the business when service members are deployed, injured or killed in the line of duty.

More than 500 wounded warriors and military family members have graduated from these entrepreneurship programs. In recognition of their impact on our nation’s military and military families, Haynie represented SU and the Whitman School at the White House launch of in April; a new national initiative spearheaded by first lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden to support and honor service members and their families.

The Barnes Professorship is named for SU trustee and Whitman alumnus Steven W. Barnes ’82, a member of the Whitman Advisory Council. Barnes has demonstrated outstanding loyalty to Whitman and the University throughout the years, and in 2010, lent his support to EBV by presenting Whitman with a generous donation to endow the program. Barnes, a certified public accountant, is managing director at Bain Capital where he has held senior operating roles at several Bain Capital portfolio companies, including CEO of Dade Behring; president of Executone Business Systems; and president of Holson Burnes Group. Prior to joining Bain Capital, Barnes held several senior management positions in the Mergers & Acquisitions Support Group of PricewaterhouseCoopers. In 2010, he was named to the Whitman Hall of Fame, which recognizes individuals from the Whitman community who have made, and continue to make, a difference in the life of the school, and last month received the 2011 Jonathan Holtz Alumnus of the Year award from Whitman during its annual awards celebration.

We’re profoundly grateful for Steve’s generosity in creating this professorship and we can’t wait to see what new heights Mike achieves as the Barnes Professor.”

Before beginning his academic career, Haynie served for 14 years as an officer in the U.S. Air Force. Trained in logistics and acquisition, he was stationed throughout the United States and the world, in operational and staff assignments. He is a sought after speaker on issues related to veterans and business, and his work with veteran entrepreneurship has been featured on the ABC Evening News, CNN, CNBC and Fox News, in addition to the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Forbes and Entrepreneur Magazine. He currently serves on the external advisory committee of the Center for Integrated Healthcare at the ���ϲ����� Regional Veterans Medical Center.
