2011 South Side Film Festival continues July 15

The ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ South Side Initiative and the Southside Community Coalition are sponsoring the fifth annual South Side Film Festival this month. Other sponsors of the event include KeyBank and Visual Technologies.

A film will be shown each Friday, July 15, 22 and 29, at 8:30 p.m. in the KeyBank parking lot, located on the corner of South Salina and Colvin streets. The series began on July 8.

The showings are free and open to the public. Those attending should bring chairs or blankets. Refreshments will be available for purchase; no coolers, alcohol or glass bottles will be allowed on the premises.

The films to be shown are:

  • July 15: “Street Fight” (2005)- A documentary that follows the 2002 mayoral campaign in Newark, N.J., in which Cory Booker attempted to unseat longtime major Sharpe James.
  • July 22: “Black in Latin America” (2011)-A PBS documentary in which Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. examines how a shared history of slavery and colonialism has influenced understandings of race and identity in six countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • July 29: “Jumping the Broom” (2011)-Two very different families converge on Martha’s Vineyard one weekend for a wedding.
