will award the 2013 Prize for Excellence in Master’s Level Teaching to Kathryn Everly, associate professor of Spanish. The award will be presented during the 2013 College of Arts and Sciences Master’s Convocation at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11, during which Everly will deliver the keynote address.
Everly has been teaching contemporary Spanish literature, film and culture at SU for 12 years. She is a distinguished scholar of Spanish and Catalan literature and feminist theory and author of two books, “History, Violence, and the Hyperreal: Representations of Culture in the Contemporary Spanish Novel” (Purdue University Press, 2010) and “Catalan Women Writers and Artists: Revisionist Views from a Feminist Space” (Bucknell University Press, 2003). She received the 2009 Florence Howe Award for feminist scholarship in a foreign language field from the Women’s Caucus for the Modern Languages, an allied organization of the Modern Language Association.
“Professor Everly’s dedication and enthusiasm both inside the classroom and out were noted by students who wrote in support of her nomination for this award,” says Gerald Greenberg, senior associate dean for academic affairs; humanities; and curriculum, instruction and programs in The College of Arts and Sciences. “It is an honor to announce that she is receiving this year’s prize for Excellence in Master’s Level Teaching.”
Everly is noted for bringing to her classes outstanding international guest lecturers, writers, musicians and artists who interact with students and enrich course content. She organizes campus-wide lectures, cultural events and film screenings featuring her guests and expands their reach through collaborations with colleagues at regional colleges and universities. During the 2011-12 academic year, Everly organized a weeklong celebration of Spanish music and poetry in collaboration with Le Moyne College. In March, she organized an event called “Alguien al otro lado,” which included a concert, roundtable and class visits by Argentinean poet Andrés Neuman and Spanish singer and songwriter Juan Trova.
Everly’s current and former students describe her as “deeply passionate” about her areas of expertise and a “ talented and inspiring leader, teacher, mentor and author.” Everly has served as the graduate program advisor in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics and has directed seven students in their master’s theses. She has inspired master’s students to pursue doctoral studies, to study abroad in Madrid and to further explore feminist perspectives in their own research.
Everly holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic literature from the University of Texas at Austin, a master’s in Hispanic literature from New York University in Madrid and a bachelor’s in English from Barnard College of Columbia University. In addition to her books, she has published several book chapters, is a co-author of a textbook, has published a number of articles in peer-reviewed journals and has been invited to present papers at a number of national and international gatherings.
