Harry Brod, widely recognized as a founding figure of the field of masculinity studies, will speak March 3 at 7 p.m. in Gifford Auditorium on “Asking For It: The Ethics and Erotics of Sexual Consent.” The lecture focuses on the problem of sexual assault and violence, and how we can combat it by teaching about consent. The lecture is free and open to the public.
“We hope that Brod’s visit will promote and foster consent dialogue on campus and will further the university’s mission to combat the problem of sexual assault on college campuses,” says Jill Sneider, sexual and relationship violence coordinator in the Office of Health Promotion.
Brod is a leading proponent of gender violence prevention campaigns across campuses nationwide. During his lecture, he discusses the meanings of “yes” and “no” and the effects of alcohol on an individual’s ability to give consent. According to Brod, “the line between sexual consent and sexual coercion is not always as clear as it seems—this is exactly why we should approach our sexual interactions with great care.”
This lecture is supported by co-curricular funding and sponsored by the Office of Health Promotion, Office of Student Assistance, Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, and the Sexual and Relationship Violence Response Team. The lecture is part of the Got Consent? Be SU.R.E. campaign.
