James McCumber

James (Jim) McCumber, director of Environmental Health and Safety Services (EHSS), has retired from the University after serving the University community for more than 30 years. His last day was June 30.

As director of EHSS, McCumber has led in the development of policies focused on regulatory compliance related to environmental health and safety, hazardous waste remediation and disposal, laboratory safety, radiation safety, and OSHA compliance and training for the University.

“Jim’s commitment to the environment and in leading environmental regulatory compliance at ���ϲ����� has made the University a safer place for over three decades,” says Senior Vice President for Safety and Chief Law Enforcement Officer Tony Callisto.

Effective July 1, Rebecca Ponza, Environmental Compliance and Radiation Protection Programs Manager, will serve as interim director of EHSS until a search for McCumber’s replacement is completed.

Rebecca Ponza brings 25 years of experience to the role of interim director, including the administration of multiple environmental protection and health and safety compliance programs for the University.

Ponza holds a B.S. in nuclear medicine technology from SUNY Buffalo and has taken several graduate level courses in ���ϲ�����’s College of Engineering and Computer Science.

“Rebecca’s education, leadership experience, documented performance and reputation will serve to provide the University with a seamless transition in environmental health and safety services areas,” Callisto said.
