Fourth annual Fashion Communications Milestone fashion show to be held at SU April 9

College of Visual and Performing Arts

Students from ϲ’s and (VPA) will present the fashion show “Cent$ + Sense-Ability: Fashion in Recession and Fashion Sustainability” on Friday, April 9, at 7 p.m. in the Newhouse 1 lobby. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Parking is available in SU pay lots.

The show is sponsored by the Fashion Communications Milestone, a collaboration of the Newhouse School and VPA’s fashion design program.

Featured will be affordable fashions—each outfit costs less than $50—styled by milestone students from clothing donated by ϲ Thrifty Shoppers stores. In addition, the show will further explore sustainability in fashion with pieces recycled and restyled by fashion design students from previously worn clothing, much of which was also donated by Thrifty Shoppers. “These ensembles speak to the recessionary times we live in,” says Carla Lloyd, co-founder of the milestone and associate professor of advertising in the Newhouse School.

The show will also feature original designs by fashion design freshmen, sophomores and juniors.

“It’s a real learning lab,” Lloyd says of the show. “And we are all excited about the show because of the message it’s sending about financial responsibility and sustainability.”

The Fashion Communications Milestone is a concentration that explores fashion and beauty as communication. Coursework, which is drawn from both Newhouse and VPA, covers such topics as the history of fashion; contemporary fashion in popular culture; visual communications; fashion advertising and promotion; fashion photography; and beauty and fashion journalism. The milestone is open to students in Newhouse or in VPA’s fashion design program.
