Cultural blend reflected in SUArt Galleries exhibition 鈥業nfinite Mirror鈥�

The has announced 鈥淚nfinite Mirror: Images of American Identity,鈥� a rich, reflective exhibition of works by 40 artists representing the vast cultural blend of modern American society. 鈥淚nfinite Mirror鈥� is on view at the SUArt Galleries from Jan. 25-March 20. An opening reception will take place Thursday, Jan. 27, from 5-7 p.m.

2trees“The images reflect the complex dynamics between people and within the minds of individuals as they participate in and contribute to a composite, inestimable culture,鈥� says Blake Bradford, 鈥淚nfinite Mirror鈥� curator and director of education for the Barnes Foundation. 鈥淲e, as Americans, would need an infinite mirror to see our full reflection.”

American artists of African, Arab, European, Asian, Latino and Native American descent explore their heritage in this vivid and diverse exhibition, using a wide variety of media. The artists examine patriotism, communication, struggle for acceptance, being an American in the 21st century and more. Humor, heartache, anger, apprehension鈥攁ll emotions are evoked by these works, raising questions about race, class, gender and age. Four main themes run through 鈥淚nfinite Mirror鈥�: self-selection, pride, assimilation and protest, providing audiences with the opportunity to re-examine both the story and storytellers of the quintessential “American dream.”

A panel discussion will take place Thursday, Feb. 17, from 3-5 p.m. in Shemin Auditorium in the Shaffer Art Building

A softbound catalogue accompanies the exhibition, containing essays by the three exhibition curators, Bradford; Benito Huerta, curator and director of The Gallery at the University of Texas at Arlington; and Robert Lee, curator and executive director at Asian American Arts Centre in New York; and an introduction by Brandywine Workshop President Allen Edmunds. Produced by Artrain, the catalogue includes artist statements, biographies and full-color photographs. Teacher packets and a family guide are also available.
