Former senator, presidential candidate, NBA Hall of Famer and author Bill Bradley will be the inaugural speaker for an upcoming lecture series at the . The Tanner Lecture Series on Ethics, Citizenship and Public Responsibility launches on Tuesday, April 10, with Bradley, who represented New Jersey in the U.S. Senate from 1979-1997. In 2000, Bradley pursued the Democratic nomination for U.S. president. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Maxwell Auditorium on the SU campus, from 6-7:15 p.m., followed by a reception in the auditorium foyer.

Parking is available in Irving Garage for a $5 fee when attendees mention the event at the entrance.

Currently managing director of the financial services firm Allen & Co. LLC, Bradley has continued in his post-political career to strive for a better society. His forthcoming book, “We Can All Do Better” reviews the state of the country by critiquing the role of money in politics, foreign policy, electoral practices and the nation’s economic path. The book provides a guide for how elected officials and private citizens can improve the future of the United States in the areas of job creation, deficit reduction, education and immigration, among others. Bradley will bring his message to the Maxwell School by speaking on those themes, which are central to the Tanner Lecture Series.

“It’s an honor to host Senator Bradley for the inaugural Tanner Lecture,” Maxwell School Dean James Steinberg says. “His distinguished career in and out of government embodies the values to which the Tanner Lectures and the Maxwell School are committed—civic engagement and public service.”

Prior to serving in the Senate, Bradley was an Olympic gold medal basketball player and played professional basketball for the New York Knicks; he was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982. Bradley has a B.A. in American history from Princeton University and an M.A. from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. Including “We Can All Do Better,” Bradley has written six books on American politics, culture and the economy. He also hosts “American Voices,” a weekly show on Sirius XM Satellite Radio that highlights the amazing accomplishments of Americans, both famous and unknown.

The series, created through an endowment from W. Lynn Tanner, aims to inform and foster a strong, responsible, and productive citizenry by using public forums to ask about the qualities of ethical citizens and the demands of public responsibility. Tanner received a Ph.D. from the Maxwell School in 1975, studying organizational change and development in the public and private sectors. Tanner later founded and now works as CEO and chairman of TEC Canada, a leadership development organization with the purpose of helping 21st century chief executives grow and develop.

The second Tanner Lecture is scheduled in fall 2012.
