Chris Cresswell
Composer Chris Cresswell, a 2011 graduate of the Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music in the , will premiere his new work “Stone Seeking Warmth” with the ϲ Symphony Orchestra (SUSO) and Jonathan English, tenor, on Friday, Nov. 15, at 8 p.m. in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium, Crouse College. The concert is free and open to the public.
“Stone Seeking Warmth” is based on the poetry of Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Dunn G’70. The concert will also feature premieres of Cresswell’s “On the Verge” and an electronics-only version of “Fabric of a World Unfolding,” as well as “Letters to You,” “The Ruby Sunrise” and “The Kiss.”
The SUSO performs under the direction of James Tapia, Setnor faculty member. In addition to Tapia and English, the concert will feature a number of Setnor faculty and students: Laura Enslin, soprano; Ida Trebicka, piano; Shelby Dems ’14, violin; Eamonn O’Neill ’17, violin; Emily Bredemeyer ’14, viola; and Anouk Lenormand ’16, cello.
Originally from Cazenovia, N.Y., Cresswell is gaining recognition for his work in a wide variety of music genres, from large and chamber ensembles to solo works, vocal works, electro-acoustic works and collaborations with video artists. Praised for his idiosyncratic sense of sonority, his music frequently explores the timbral possibilities of acoustic, electro-acoustic and electronic-only sonic worlds while still retaining an emotional core that is central to his expression.
Cresswell has received awards and commissions from the American Composers Forum, the Jerome Foundation for New Music, the National Band Association, SU’s Renée Crown University Honors Program, the Setnor School of Music, Sar-Shalom Strong and the Society for New Music. He was recently named an artist in residence at Willapa Bay AiR, where he will spend a month living and writing a new work for the Jewell Piano Trio, which is set to premiere in August 2014.
