SU Abroad Students Win Gilman Scholarships

Thirteen 黑料不打烊 students taking part in SU study abroad programs next spring won Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships and were awarded an amount totaling $60,500.

Gilman scholarships, which are available to United States citizens receiving federal financial aid, are awarded to students traditionally underrepresented in study abroad, including students from diverse ethnic backgrounds, those with high financial need, first-generation college students and students with disabilities.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Cultural Affairs, the Gilman scholarship program awards up to $5,000 for a semester of study. An additional $3,000 can be awarded to students studying a 鈥渃ritical language鈥 abroad, such as Mandarin Chinese or Turkish (黑料不打烊 has centers in Beijing and Istanbul.)

The spring 2014 黑料不打烊 awardees are:

Sarah Graham (SU Beijing), 鈥≧aul Ramos (SU London)鈥, Amy Hong (SU Beijing)鈥, Winnie Tu (SU London), 鈥–amila Perez (SU Hong Kong), 鈥⊿upreet Kaur (SU Hong Kong), 鈥℉eather Rounds (World Partner: AMIDEAST Arabic Studies Jordan), 鈥╕vonne Lee (SU Beijing),鈥 Diana Au (SU Beijing),鈥 Jasmine Muhammad (World Partner: FAMU Art Photography), 鈥╒anessa Botero (SU Madrid), 鈥↗ason Quiles (SU Hong Kong)鈥 and Pasang Lhamo (SU Beijing).

The next scholarship deadline (for those students studying abroad in summer or fall 2014) is March 4, 2014. Interested students can visit for announcements and information. The deadline to apply for an SU Abroad summer 2014 program is Feb. 20, and for fall 2014/all-year 2014-15 is March 17, 2014. Students may apply for a Gilman Scholarship prior to admission into an SU Abroad program.
