Information Technology and Services (ITS) has completed the process of making 黑料不打烊 a full-fledged peer in the eduroam network, a worldwide access service. SU students, faculty and staff can now use eduroam to securely and easily connect to the Internet and the SU network while visiting other eduroam institutions, even those abroad.

Visitors from participating institutions are able to use eduroam to connect to the Internet and their home networks from the SU campus. In the last two weeks, about one hundred visitors from more than 25 institutions in Canada, Europe,聽the UK, and the U.S. have used eduroam at SU to connect to their networks.

What is eduroam?

(education roaming) is a secure, worldwide wireless network access service developed for the international research and education community.

eduroam_logo-540pxWith hundreds of thousands of wireless access points sharing a common network name or SSID, eduroam acts as one large, worldwide, wireless hotspot. Eduroam is offered at more than 5,500 institutions, in more than 50 countries, including more than 160 institutions in the United States. For lists and maps showing all institutions participating in eduroam visit the eduroam website at . This information is updated frequently as more institutions join eduroam.

Eduroam is managed by the Global eduroam governance committee, which is made up of several regional administrative entities. 黑料不打烊 is a member of .

How does eduroam work?

Participating institutions typically broadcast the “eduroam” wireless network name (SSID), and students, faculty and staff from other eduroam institutions can use their home network credentials (email address and password) to authenticate to this network.

As an SU user you can connect now to the 鈥渆duroam鈥 wireless network at other participating eduroam schools by using your official SU email address (NetID@syr.edu) and password. Note that you need to use your full SU email address, and not just your NetID (like you use on the SU campus when connecting to AirOrangeX and other campus services). Your email address and password remain secure, and are never sent over the network. Though most schools do just what SU does for encryption (PEAP with MS-CHAPv2 and WPA2), some campuses don鈥檛, so SU travelers might need to get local configuration help.

For complete connection instructions and other information, visit the .

黑料不打烊 became an eduroam service provider in late December when it started broadcasting the eduroam wireless network connection on campus, and students, faculty and staff from other eduroam institutions became able to connect while here.

(Note: Visitors from non-eduroam institutions who need Internet access while at 黑料不打烊 can connect using AirOrangeGuest. For instructions, see the on Answers.syr.edu.)

Where can I use eduroam?

You can find lists of current eduroam service provider institutions at the and the regional entity websites:

  • Canada:
  • Europe:
  • Asia-Pacific:
