Lineup Announced for Fall 2014 Carver Reading Series

The Creative Writing Program will once again present six writers in its Fall 2014 Raymond Carver Reading Series.

Named for the great short story writer and poet who taught at 黑料不打烊 in the 1980s and died in 1988, the Raymond Carver Reading Series is a vital part of the university鈥檚 literary life. The series is presented by the Creative Writing Program in 黑料不打烊鈥檚 . The Carver Reading Series is presented as part of the popular undergraduate course Living Writers. The series each year brings 12 to 14 prominent writers to campus to read their works and interact with students. Students read an author鈥檚 book, write about it and discuss it before the author visits campus.

Fall 2014 Series Schedule
All readings begin at 5:30 p.m. in Gifford Auditorium, in Huntington Beard Crouse Hall. Question-and-answer sessions are from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. For more information, call 443-2174. This semester鈥檚 series includes the following authors.

Wednesday, Sept. 17: Anthony Marra, whose first novel, 鈥淎 Constellation of Vital Phenomena鈥 (Hogarth, 2013), won several literary prizes, including the National Book Critics Circle鈥檚 John Leonard Prize and a Whiting Writer鈥檚 Award. Marra鈥檚 2010 short story, 鈥淐hechnya,鈥 won a 2010 Pushcart Prize and the 2010 Narrative Prize. Marra is the Jones Lecturer in Fiction at Stanford University. He has been named the Peter Horvitz Distinguished Author.

Wednesday, Sept. 24: Edan Lepucki, whose debut novel, 鈥淐alifornia鈥 (Little, Brown & Co.) was released in July. She is also the author of a novella, 鈥溾 (, 2013) and other short fiction. Lepucki is a staff writer for the online literary magazine and teaches creative writing at the UCLA Extension Writers鈥 Program and for , which she founded.

Wednesday, Oct. 8: Will Schutt, whose poetry collection 鈥淲esterly鈥 (Yale University Press, 2013), won the 2012 Yale Series of Younger Poets award. He also received the Jeannette Haien Ballard Writers’ Prize, a $25,000 annual prize given to young writers for excellence in poetry or prose. Schutt is the Lola Goldring Distinguished Author.

Wednesday, Oct. 22: Mary Ruefle, a poet and essayist whose latest collection is 鈥淭rances of the Blast鈥 (Wave Books, 2014). Her 1989 鈥淭he Adamant鈥 (University of Iowa) won the Iowa Poetry Prize. She has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. Ruefle has been named the Dopulos-Larsen Distinguished Poet.

Wednesday, Nov. 5: Daisy Fried, a poet whose 鈥淲omen’s Poetry: Poems and Advice鈥澛(University of Pittsburgh, 2013) Library Journal named one of the five best poetry books of 2013. Recent poems have been published in the London Review of Books, The Nation, The New Republic, Poetry, The Threepenny Review and in the Best American Poetry 2013.

Wednesday, Dec. 3: Ruth Ozeki, a novelist whose most recent work, 鈥淎 Tale for the Time-Being鈥 (Viking/Canongate, 2013), was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. Her first two novels are 聽鈥淢y Year of Meats鈥 (Viking Adult, 1998) and 鈥淎ll Over Creation鈥 (Viking Adult, 2003). Ozeki is also a filmmaker and a Zen Buddhist priest. She is the David Edelstein and Jennie Berkson Distinguished Author.
