Elementary school students in the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ City School District will get newly purchased books as a result of proceeds from the Literacy Corps’ fundraiser, Book It! for First Book.
Book It! for First Book will benefit children in the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ City School District.
The fundraiser is being held by Corps Council, Literacy Corps’ leadership group. The event features a campus-wide scavenger hunt with literacy-based clues leading teams to and from academic buildings, around the Quad and nearby campus areas. The proceeds from the event will be used to purchase books through the nonprofit organization First Book. Books purchased will be donated to students in the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ City School District in order to provide more resources for learning and literacy support.
The event has also been made possible through the guidance of various Shaw Center Staff: Colleen Cicotta, associate director for literacy initiatives; Amanda Johnson, Winnick Literacy Program Coordinator; Leslie Cortese, administrative specialist; and Associate Vice President and Director Pam Heintz.
The Literacy Corps is an engaged learning experience for ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ students. Students are trained as tutors to improve literacy skills in urban school and community-based settings. Each year Literacy Corps tutors engage in 30,000-35,000 hours of academic support for students in the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ City School District, while developing positive and impactful relationships with the students and site staff. The inspiration for Book It! for First Book stems from the need to support students in the district, as well as the Literacy Corps’ mission to engage students as citizens and active participants in their communities.
Book It! for First Book will take place on April 11 from noon-3 p.m. and will be based out of 304ABC Schine Student Center. Teams of four participants are encouraged, but teams of one to three members are also welcome. Registration is $32 for a team of four participants and $10/person for teams with three participants or less. The event is open to ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ students, staff and faculty, as well as members of the greater ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Community.
