A juried exhibition of work based on the theme “What Did You Fight For, What Did You Bring Home: Moral Injury in the Lives of Military Veterans” will be on view April 17-21 at 914Works, 914 E. Genesee St., ϲ. The exhibition, which will feature artistic and literary work by veterans and community members, is free and open to the public. A reception with remarks will be held on Friday, April 17, at 5 p.m., with the gallery closing at 10 p.m.
The exhibition is part of a two-day at ϲ April 17-18 that will bring local, regional and national scholars, clinical practitioners, writers and artists to address the psychological, spiritual and artistic dimensions of moral injury among veterans. Moral injury is the damage done to one’s conscience or moral compass when one perpetrates, witnesses or fails to prevent acts that transgress one’s own moral and ethical values/codes of conduct/understanding.
The exhibition was juried by Andrew Hansen Miller, U.S. Army OEF veteran and coordinator of the Moral Injury Project; James Haywood Rolling, dual professor of art education and teaching and leadership in the (VPA) and the ; Jordan Robinson, Marine Corps veteran; and Sam Van Aken, associate professor of sculpture in VPA.
914Works is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The gallery is open from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. on Third Thursdays (Th3) of each month. For more information about the exhibition, contact Miller at anmiller@syr.edu.
