The (VPA) has been ranked No. 33 by U.S. News & World Report on its 2017 Best Graduate Schools in Fine Arts list. VPA was previously ranked no. 45 by U.S. News in 2012—the last year it published graduate fine arts rankings.

According to U.S. News, the rankings of master of fine arts programs are based solely on the results of a peer assessment survey. Deans and other top academics at 229 master of fine arts programs in art and design were surveyed in fall 2015.

VPA offers master of fine arts programs in its School of Art, School of Design and Department of Transmedia. Graduate students pursue their degrees within the setting of a major research university and with opportunities to study and exhibit their work on a global scale. Recent student successes have included a nomination for a prestigious Romanian Gopo Award in film (Ioana Turcan G’17) and acceptance into the 5th Moscow Biennale for Young Art (Ozan Atalan G’16 and Jeremy Santiago-Horseman G’16).

“Our steady rise in rankings is recognition of the innovative programming, professionally engaged faculty and excellent students that make up graduate education at SU:VPA,” says Lucinda Havenhand, associate dean of research and graduate studies and an associate professor of environmental and interior design in the School of Design. “I am thrilled that the extraordinary work of our programs is being acknowledged and that we are able move toward our rightful position as one of the top graduate schools of fine arts in the country.”
