Student journalists and emergency response officials will get the chance to put their skills to the test on Monday, July 25.
That’s when the yearly mock incident drill will be held. It’s an exercise that takes much planning, along with notification of the campus community, who may see fire and police activity Monday morning.
This year’s drill will involve a staged incident near the steam station (Almond Avenue and East Taylor Street) happening between 9-11 a.m. Fire and hazardous materials crews will be on the scene, along with nearly 30 student journalists.
The students are from the “News Writing and Reporting” class at the . It’s a challenge for them to get real world experience in covering breaking news. After all, the nature of spot news dictates that it can happen at any time. Planning a class around this can be difficult. The exercise on Monday will give students a chance to cover a developing news story, including interviews with fire and rescue personnel, along with eyewitnesses.
