Throughout the month of October, the Office of Health Promotion is hosting programs and events to raise awareness about relationship violence in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Working in collaboration with the Office of Health Promotion are the Peer Educators Encouraging Healthy Relationships and Sexuality (PEEHRS), Counseling Center, Department of Recreation Services and Vera House.

The Hall of Languages is lit up in purple in a previous year to “Shine the Light on Domestic Violence.”

To commemorate the month, the Hall of Languages will be illuminated in purple, the designated color for Domestic Violence Awareness Month, each evening as part of the “Shine the Light on Domestic Violence” .

“We encourage the entire campus community to join us in “Going Purple” throughout the month to help raise awareness about domestic and relationship violence and demonstrate our support for victims and survivors,” says Katelyn Cowen, director of the Office of Health Promotion.

Events and programs for the month include:

• 4—Pornography: Normalizing the Relationship Between Violence and Sex
  7 p.m., Stolkin Auditorium, Physics Building
• 7—Go Purple: Walk, Run or Roll
  6 p.m., Registration on the Quad
• 10-14—Go Purple: It’s On Us Week of Action Office Decorating Contest

• 17-23—Clothesline Project
  Panasci Lounge
• 17 and 18—Hands Against Violence Tabling
  10 a.m.-2 p.m., Schine Student Center Atrium

The month concludes with “Go Purple Day” on Thursday, Oct. 20, as part of the statewide campaign in which all New Yorkers are encouraged to wear purple.
