A panel discussion on “Top Down and Bottom-Up Drivers of Renewable Energy” will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, in Kittredge Auditorium.

The speakers will be Michael Mehling, executive director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Chris Carrick of CNY Regional Planning and Development Board and Solarize CNY. The event is part of the Top Down/Bottom Up Series on Climate Solutions.

Mehling is an expert on the German government’s ambitious and remarkably successful experiment to promote alternative energy nationwide. He helps coordinate research across MIT on the policy implications of energy, climate change and the environment. He simultaneously holds appointments as a research scientist with the MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) and as a visiting professor with the University of Strathclyde Law School.

Carrick directs the energy management program for the Central New York Regional Planning and Development Board, a public agency that serves Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Onondaga and Oswego counties. Carrick helps communities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the preparation of energy and climate protection plans and the implementation of clean energy projects and public engagement programs like Solarize CNY.
