South Asia Center Call for FLAS Academic Year 2017-18 Applications

ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ’sÌýSouth Asia Center announces its Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship Competition for Academic Year 2017-18.

The FLAS Fellowship Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Education under Title VI, assists students in pursuing training in order to acquire a high level of competence in one or more languages critical to national needs of the United States, and a fuller understanding of the areas, regions or countries in which that language is commonly used. The Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ’s Maxwell School houses the South Asia Center through which these fellowships are administered.

Eligibility is restricted to undergraduates and graduates who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents AND who are enrolled full-time in a program of study at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ that includes intensive foreign language and area studies coursework or dissertation work that is enhanced by foreign language training. Graduate students pursuing Ph.D.s must have at least intermediate proficiency. Professional graduate students wanting to take language courses at the introductory level will have their cases examined on a case-by-case basis by the U.S. Department of Education. Undergraduate students with sufficient prior training to take an intermediate or advanced level of Hindi or Urdu language are also eligible.

Academic Year Deadline: Friday, March 10, 2017 at 11:59 pm EST

The South Asia Center requests applications from qualified undergraduate and graduate students who wish to enhance their knowledge of a South Asian language to complement their current program of study. Academic year FLAS fellowships at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ are awarded for Hindi-Urdu. Academic year 2017-18 fellowships consist of a scholarship of $10,000 towards the cost of tuition and $5,000 towards living expenses for undergraduates; graduate students receive 24 credits of tuition and a stipend of $15,000.

All fellowships awarded are contingent on continued funding by the U.S. Department of Education’s Foreign Language and Area Studies grant.

NEW REQUIREMENT:
A completed FAFSA form () must be submitted by March 10, 2017. This is required of both graduate and undergraduate applicants. You will be asked to submit your EFC number when you complete the application. The committee will consider financial need as well as academic merit when making funding decisions.
