Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:
Today, the federal government announced that the Department of Defense will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in the U.S. military. This decision is inconsistent with ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ’s values of access, and of inclusion, as well as of support for veterans.
Our University has, for more than a century, been dedicated to working closely with veterans and military-connected students and families. We are proud to have earned consistently high rankings and praise from military officials for those efforts, as well as from advocates for diversity and inclusion.
I have worked closely with transgender students, staff, and faculty at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ. It is offensive to me that anyone would question the patriotism or competence of the transgender members of our community to contribute to our national defense. ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ will always be a place that welcomes people of all identities, including within our programs for veterans and military-connected families.
