Facebook’s Fake News Problem Persists
In the wake of the massacre in Las Vegas, many are seeing fake news of the event being spread on Facebook and other social media sites. This is nothing new to the goliath company, having already been in hot water following Russian influencers buying ads during the election period. For Fortune Magazine, Newhouse Assistant Professor of Communications Jennifer Grygiel wrote a piece on what Facebook is doing wrong, and what it needs to do to get it right.
鈥淚s Facebook having a Frankenstein moment when it comes to news aggregation鈥攈as it created something it can鈥檛 fully control? The company鈥檚 executives might tell you that it has, but this is absolutely not the case,鈥� she wrote. 鈥淭he reality is that Facebook needs to hire humans to edit and review the content it promotes as news鈥攁nd it needs to hire a lot of them.鈥�
