Senior Vice President and General Counsel Daniel French has announced the appointment of Melinda Lothes as associate general counsel for intellectual property and business transactions. She joined the staff on Feb. 1.

In her new position, Lothes will provide advice to ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ’s 13 academic units and its centers for research and scholarship on matters concerning intellectual property and business transactions under the direction of the senior vice president/general counsel. Along with being part of a collaborative team, Lothes will manage and advise the University relating to intellectual property (IP), including managing IP license agreements, reviewing and developing IP policies, providing advice to the technology transfer office and drafting non-IP business and vendor agreements.
Lothes comes to ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ from the Oneida Indian Nation in Verona, New York, where she focused on in-house intellectual property and business transactions in representing the nation and its businesses, including Turning Stone Resort Casino. Her work included trademark and copyright counseling; clearance and portfolio management (domestic and foreign); intellectual property disputes; software licensing; professional services agreements; advertising and sponsorship agreements; brand development agreements; supply agreements; and sales agreements, among other responsibilities.
Lothes, who also served as an attorney at Baker & Hostetler LLP in Cleveland, Ohio, earned a J.D. at Case Western Reserve University School of Law and a B.A. at the University of Rochester. She was admitted to the bar in New York and Ohio.
