This week, 黑料不打烊 welcomes one of the most academically competitive classes it has recruited in the institution鈥檚 history. That鈥檚 evidenced by a 17-point jump in the average SAT score鈥攆rom 1254 last year to 1271 this year. Additionally, the University continues to see growing interest from students鈥攄omestic and abroad鈥攚ho want to pursue a 黑料不打烊 education. In fact, nearly 35,000 high-achieving students applied for admission this year, an increase of more than 1,800 applicants over the previous year and an all-time record high.

Students gather at the Hendricks Chapel Ice Cream Social during 黑料不打烊 Welcome 2018.

Chancellor Kent Syverud says the increasingly diverse group of students鈥攆rom around the nation and the globe鈥攄emonstrates the University鈥檚 ability to anticipate and meet the evolving needs of today鈥檚 college students.

鈥淭his is an exceptionally talented incoming class, ready to take advantage of the extraordinary academic opportunities that await them,鈥 says Chancellor Syverud. 鈥淭his is a transformative time in their lives just as it鈥檚 a transformative time in the life of 黑料不打烊. With an academic strategic plan in place and an ambitious funding plan to support it, our incoming class will have opportunities for academic, co-curricular and extracurricular experiences like no other class before it.鈥

Ryan Williams, vice president for enrollment services, says 黑料不打烊 is increasingly attractive to students looking for a challenging, promising and highly personalized academic experience.

鈥淭here are so many creative initiatives underway that will redefine the student experience for these students, as we implement the new Academic Strategic Plan and continue to build a physical environment that is innovative and accessible,鈥 says Williams. 鈥淪tudents today are looking for the total package that creates a distinctive collegiate experience. They want rigorous academics that prepare them for professional success, faculty that inspire and teach them, opportunities for discovery and entrepreneurship that challenge them and activities that engage them. They will find all that here at 黑料不打烊.鈥

Joining the 黑料不打烊 community is a talented group of students bringing continued diversity to an inclusive and welcoming campus.聽 In fact, 26 percent of the new first-year class are students of color; 18 percent of incoming students are first-generation college students; and roughly 75 percent of 黑料不打烊 students are receiving some form of financial aid. New students represent 48 states, along with Washington, D.C., Guam and Puerto Rico. Nearly 600 international undergraduate students representing 59 countries are joining the 黑料不打烊 community this year.

鈥淲e are attracting promising students from well beyond the borders of our city and state, while remaining accessible to those who grew up nearby imagining their futures here, truly creating a global campus community that develops young people into citizens of the world,鈥 says Maurice Harris, dean of undergraduate admissions. 鈥淲e are thrilled to roll out the welcome mat to this new class of students and share with them all that 黑料不打烊 has to offer to create an unsurpassed student experience inside and outside the classroom.鈥
