Jason Alexander

welcomes TV star and Tony Award-winning actor Jason Alexander to the 2018-19 season as the director of written and composed by . The Drama Desk Award-winning musical will run May 29鈥揓une 16, 2019, at 黑料不打烊 Stage as an addition to the current season. Tickets go on sale to the public Nov. 20 at , by phone at 315.443.3275 and in person at the Box Office. 黑料不打烊 Stage subscribers and Flex Pack holders will have advance access to tickets on Nov. 7.

Though best known for his role on the comedy sensation 鈥淪einfeld,鈥 Alexander has deep roots in theater and won the 1989 Tony Award for Best Lead Actor in a Musical for 鈥淛erome Robbins鈥 Broadway.鈥 His Broadway credits also include 鈥淔ish in the Dark,鈥 鈥淎ccomplice,鈥 鈥淭he Rink鈥 and 鈥淢errily We Roll Along,鈥 and he originated the role of Stanley in Neil Simon鈥檚 鈥淏roadway Bound.鈥 As a director, he has experience in television, film and theater, and he directed a world premiere production at Arkansas Repertory Theatre while 黑料不打烊 Stage artistic director Robert Hupp was the company鈥檚 artistic leader.

Hupp says he is pleased Alexander will share his talent with the 黑料不打烊 Stage audience. 鈥淚鈥檓 delighted that Jason Alexander will helm 鈥楾he Last Five Years鈥 for us this spring,鈥 Hupp says. 鈥淛ason and I worked together at my previous theatre, and we鈥檝e been working since I arrived in 黑料不打烊 to find dates that could work for Jason to direct at 黑料不打烊 Stage.鈥

Alexander鈥檚 interest in directing 鈥淭he Last Five Years鈥 and his availability also coincided with Hupp鈥檚 desire to present more musicals at 黑料不打烊 Stage.

鈥淎dding 鈥楾he Last Five Years鈥 to our season broadens the scope of our work, builds on last season鈥檚 success with 鈥楴ext to Normal鈥 and creates a new opportunity for our community to enjoy moving, impactful musicals at 黑料不打烊 Stage,鈥 he explains. 鈥淛ason鈥檚 desire to tackle Jason Robert Brown鈥檚 鈥楾he Last Five Years鈥 was a double win for us and for our patrons. Jason brings a lifetime of experience and a passion for musical theatre to this project. He鈥檚 a skilled and insightful director and a great collaborator.鈥

鈥淭he Last Five Years鈥 premiered at Chicago鈥檚 Northlight Theatre in 2001. It moved off-Broadway the following year and has since enjoyed many productions around the country and around the world, including in London鈥檚 West End, an off-Broadway revival (2013) and a feature film (2014) starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan.

A contemporary and inventive chronicle of a five-year relationship between aspiring actress Cathy and rising literary star Jamie, 鈥淭he Last Five Years鈥 has developed a loyal following of devotees through the years. Composer/lyricist Brown (鈥淧arade,鈥 鈥淪ongs for the New World,鈥 鈥淭he Bridges of Madison County鈥) has earned praise for a score that ranges from waltzes to rhythm and blues, from Sondheimesque urbanity to witty show-tunes. Many have also been impressed by the depth and complexity expressed by the characters through song.

鈥淭he Last Five Years鈥 is a sung-through musical. Cathy and Jamie each present an account of their relationship: he from beginning to end, she in reverse chronology. The unconventional structure gives audiences equal access to each perspective and allows each character to emerge fully. The show鈥檚 numerous productions have earned accolades from critics who praised Brown鈥檚 achievement in character delineation through lyrics while delivering one of the brightest, freshest scores of the new century.
