Nominations Sought for Teaching Recognition Award for Non-Tenured Faculty Members

Nominations are being accepted for the to highlight outstanding teaching by non-tenured faculty members. The Teaching Recognition Award, a component of the Laura J. and L. Douglas Meredith Professorship program,, recognizes excellence in teaching and encourages a culture of collegial mentoring among faculty members.

Nominations for the 2018-19 academic year are due Jan. 25, 2019. Each year up to seven awards may be given.

Teaching Recognition Awards may be presented to faculty who have completed two years of teaching at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ and, where applicable, are not yet in their tenure review year. Teaching Recognition Award recipients receive $3,000 for professional development. The funds may be used for expenses they may incur in furthering their work, such as the purchase of equipment, materials, or travel.

Each year, up to seven awards may be given, reflecting a mix of non-tenured, tenure track faculty; teaching professors (of any rank); professors of practice; and adjunct and part-time instructors.

In a review of the program during the 2017-18 academic year, several recommendations were made regarding changes to the program. Two notable changes include:

  • The committee now has the flexibility to recommend how the seven awards will be distributed among tenure-track and non-tenure track faculty. The committee can now recommend two awards in each category, with the remaining three recommendations to be made independent of appointment status.
  • A nominee’s attention to student diversity and incorporation of inclusive pedagogy will now be a critical factor in their consideration.

Nominations are made by any faculty member, with the concurrence of the nominee’s department chair, where applicable, and dean.

Nominations should be addressed to the Teaching Recognition Award Review Committee and submitted in hard copy to LaVonda N. Reed, associate provost for faculty affairs, at 503 Crouse-Hinds Hall, and by email as a single PDF to Sharon Alestalo at swalesta@syr.edu.
