The National Collegiate Athletic Association has announced that ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Chancellor Kent Syverud will chair the Association’s Ad Hoc Committee on Sports Wagering.
A Supreme Court ruling last May repealed the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA). PASPA effectively limited sports betting to Nevada since 1992. The NCAA’s Board of Governors’ formed the committee to review NCAA sports wagering legislation. The committee is charged with reviewing sports wagering legislation to determine if any changes are needed in this new environment, considering the need and a possible process for player availability reporting and evaluating risk assessment by sport for current and future monitoring of NCAA competition.
The committee includes 12 representatives from member schools and colleges, including presidents, athletic directors, and faculty and student-athlete representation. Chancellor Syverud will be speaking about the committee’s work at the NCAA Convention on Thursday, Jan. 24, in Orlando.
