黑料不打烊 Stage Presents a Contemporary Take on 鈥楶ride and Prejudice鈥

黑料不打烊 Stage

presents Kate Hamill鈥檚 a contemporary take on Jane Austen鈥檚 classic that鈥檚 full of surprises, through April 7, at the 黑料不打烊 Stage/SU Theatre Complex, 820 E. Genesee St., 黑料不打烊.

graphic imageIn recent years, Austen has found renewal and acclaim Off-Broadway and in regional theatres, largely through the unconventional and ingenious adaptations of Hamill, who is both a playwright and actor.

Hamill鈥檚 鈥淧ride and Prejudice鈥 is distinctly her own, decidedly comic and inventive, yet extraordinarily true to the source. It is Austen told with the high energy and theatrical flair of 鈥淭he 39 Steps鈥 or Ken Ludwig鈥檚 鈥淏askerville.鈥 It is no wonder Hamill has become an Off-Broadway favorite.

鈥淚 love to create pieces of theatre that are highly theatrical and that are surprising,鈥 Hamill explained on NPR鈥檚 鈥淗ere & Now.鈥 鈥淲hat I like to do is for the audience to come in expecting something, and come out being like, 鈥榃ow, that was completely different from what I expected.鈥欌

The degree to which Hamill has achieved this aim is reflected in the glowing reviews 鈥淧ride and Prejudice鈥 received for its premiere in 2017 at the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival and subsequent transfer to New York鈥檚 Primary Stages.

鈥淗er joyous, lovingly painted adaptations of cherished romances are everything fans of these novels could possibly hope for. Hamill鈥檚 new play has turned the original story into a farcical, hilarious romp, while earnestly maintaining the integrity and desperate exigence of Austen鈥檚 original,鈥 reported TheatrePizzaz.

鈥淭he stuff hits are made of… the ever-ingenious Ms. Hamill has given us something completely and delightfully different. The language is traditional but the approach is thoroughly modern,鈥 noted The Wall Street Journal, which named Hamill Playwright of the Year in 2017.

Jason O鈥機onnell directs the 黑料不打烊 Stage production of 鈥淧ride and Prejudice.鈥 He knows well the material and the playwright, having portrayed Mr. Darcy in the premiere production opposite Hamill鈥檚 Lizzy Bennet. O鈥機onnell credits Hamill鈥檚 deep understanding of and sympathy for Austen鈥檚 characters as a key to why audiences respond so well to her adaptations.

鈥淧eople love the novel and the story so much. They feel like they know the characters, that they have ownership of them in a way,鈥 he explains. 鈥淎nd the amazing thing about Kate鈥檚 adaptation is that it makes the characters even more accessible somehow, even easier to love.鈥

O鈥機onnell cites his own experience of playing Mr. Darcy as an illuminating example.

鈥淚n Kate鈥檚 version, a seemingly impenetrable enigma like Mr. Darcy becomes a social misfit, deeply sympathetic in his awkwardness. She gets to the root of all of these characters in such a beautiful way. I think that鈥檚 what audiences respond to,鈥 said O鈥機onnell.

While acknowledging that Hamill鈥檚 slightly irreverent tone and playful staging give 鈥淧ride and Prejudice鈥 a contemporary spin, O鈥機onnell balks at the notion that her adaptation should be considered an update.

鈥淭he way these people speak, the language they use, the realities of their lives and the world they inhabit are very much in keeping with the period of Austen鈥檚 original,鈥 he says.

In addition to 鈥淧ride and Prejudice,鈥 Hamill has written successful adaptations of 鈥淪ense and Sensibility,鈥 Thackeray鈥檚 鈥淰anity Fair鈥 and 鈥淟ittle Women.鈥 She refers to these as 鈥渇eminist progressive adaptions,鈥 a contemporary perspective that distinguishes her take on these classics without distancing them from the source material.

Rather, O鈥機onnell observes, it makes her plays and characters immediate and recognizable.

鈥淜ate has an incredibly strong understanding of the women at the center of these stories and, as a feminist playwright, really gets inside the heads and hearts of characters who鈥攄espite the constraints of the times in which they 鈥榣ived鈥 (or, rather, were first brought to life by their respective authors)鈥攁re really feminists in their own right. On some level, Kate is Lizzy Bennet, she is Becky Sharp, she is Jo March. She breathes a life into these fellow feminists that, in its deep empathy and immediacy, feels contemporary, though I would argue a better word for it is actually timeless.鈥

Tickets for 鈥淧ride and Prejudice鈥 are on sale now and can be purchased at , in person at the Box Office at 820 E. Genesee St., 黑料不打烊, or by phone at 315.443.275.
