Potential Border Issues Could Have Huge Impact On Avocados From Mexico

President Trump has threatened to shut down the U.S.-Mexico border if Mexico doesn’t stop illegal immigrants from crossing immediately. Experts fear the potential shutdown would have major implications on trade, particularly produce items like avocados and berries.

is an assistant professor of supply chain management at the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at ϲ.

Li says:

“I don’t think there’s an alternative source for avocados coming from Mexico. So, the border close will have a huge impact on avocados.

“As shown on the , the shipment is from California, Mexico and Chile with Mexico accounting for at least 96 percent.

“Although the supply from California has tripled in the past two weeks (from March 10 to March 24) the supply from Chile in the same time frame has dropped significantly from 224,208 to 0.

“Anticipating the avocado impact, smart retailers may get more supply of the top substitute of avocado – pesto.”
