“Social media has bruised and battered American democracy.”
That’s the premise set forth by three ϲ professors in their proposal for a book recently accepted for publication by Routledge.

The book was born out of the speaker series the trio of professors organized in fall 2018 to explore the intersection of politics and technology.
The book will comprise a collection of theoretical essays written by well-established researchers from across the country, examining topics ranging from digital activism to fake news to the societal impacts of combining social media and politics.
Among the authors are , assistant professor of religion in the College of Arts and Sciences; Newhouse alumna G’99, G’12, assistant professor of journalism at the University of Texas at Austin; and , director of the Information Warfare Working Group at Stanford University, as well as others. Luttrell, Glass and Xiao will also contribute chapters.
“There is no better time than now to explore the complexities of social media’s impact on democracy in the U.S.,” says Luttrell. “Contributions from well-respected academics tackle topics from activism to the role of AI and misinformation in today’s digitally driven society.”
The book is due out in spring 2021.
