Dr. David J. Langer, Renowned Neurosurgeon and Star of Netflix’s ‘Lenox Hill,’ to Engage University Community in Conversation on Oct. 19

David J. Langer

Dr. David J. Langer, chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Lenox Hill Hospital, a featured physician on the new Netflix docuseries “Lenox Hill” and a ϲ parent, will join members of the ϲ community for a virtual conversation on Monday, Oct. 19.

The conversation, “Neuroscience, Netflix and COVID-19,” begins at 7 p.m. and is sponsored by the Division of Advancement and External Affairs and the Neuroscience Program in the College of Arts and Sciences. , and closed captioning will be provided for the program.

The conversation will be moderated by Sandra Hewett, Beverly Petterson Professor of Neuroscience and executive director of neuroscience studies in the College of Arts and Sciences, and Katherine Villarian ’21, a neuroscience major and psychology major in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Langer is vice president of neurosurgery for Northwell Health’s Western Region and professor of neurosurgery and radiology at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Nationally and internationally recognized as a leading neurosurgeon and expert in cerebral revascularization and cerebral aneurysms, Langer brings over 22 years of experience to his highly personalized direct patient care practice and specialty in diseases of the brain vessels.

As one of the few cerebral bypass surgeons in the country, Langer’s award-winning work has been featured in numerous peer-reviewed publications, and he has spoken nationally and internationally on vascular disorders such as aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations of the brain.

Langer established the , dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and support of patients and their families with Moyamoya disease and developed Playback Health, a smartphone app employing clinical multimedia creation and communication to enhance patient experience and improve accessto personalized medical information. Playback Health has grown into the health system and continues to creatively disrupt the status quo in patient communication electronic medical records.

“Lenox Hill,” which launched on Netflix in June, provides an honest and emphatic look into the professional roles of Langer and three other doctors in New York City. Langer has appeared on CNN, FOX, ABC and CBS as well as the Dr. Oz Show to offer his neurosurgical expertise to the public.

Most recently, Langer spearheaded a global summer internship program, BRAINterns, offering free virtual education to high school through medical students due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Adapting to a new way of teaching, he and his team offered over 15,000 students the physician shadowing experience through virtual webinars, academic seminars and virtually bringing them into the operating room to see live, neurosurgical procedures.
