Nina Kohn
, the David M. Levy L’48 Professor of Law and faculty director of online education in the College of Law, authored an op-ed for The Guardian titled “.â€
Kohn is a faculty affiliate with the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Aging Studies Institute and her scholarly research focuses on elder law and the civil rights of older adults and persons with diminished cognitive capacity.
In the piece, Kohn writes, “guardianship is often treated as a go-to intervention for individuals with cognitive disabilities or serious mental health problems, not a last resort. For decades, advocates for older adults and individuals with disabilities have called for reforming guardianship laws around the world. In recent years, there has also been an explosion of interest in encouraging alternatives to guardianship—especially , a process by which individuals who might otherwise be unable to make their own decisions do so with help from people they trust.â€
