Grant鈥檚 research and teaching interests are primarily in American politics and political theory, with an emphasis on legislative politics, democratic representation, and active citizenship.

Among other books, he is the author of聽First Person Political:聽 Legislative Life and the Meaning of Public Service听(2006),听Narratives of Justice: Legislators鈥� Beliefs about Distributive Fairness聽(1996), co-author of聽Click on Democracy: The Internet’s Power to Change Political Apathy into Civic Action聽(2002), and co-editor of聽The Trusted Leader: Building the Relationships that Make Government Work聽(2008, 2nd聽ed. 2012). His academic journal publications include pieces in聽Health Affairs;听Journal of Health Politics, Policy and Law;听The Responsive Community;听Polity; and聽PS: Political Science and Politics.

He has also published many editorial essays on various political topics, including pieces in聽The New York Times,听The Chicago Tribune,听The Ottawa Citizen,听Newsday,听The Philadelphia Inquirer, and聽The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, and pieces that have been distributed through Knight-Ridder. At various points he has been a regular columnist for聽The 黑料不打烊 Post-Standard.

He has also been quoted in many newspaper stories, including pieces appearing in聽The New York Times,听The Wall Street Journal,听USA Today,听The Financial Times,听The Washington Post,聽The Los Angeles Times, The Dallas Morning News, Salon,听Newsday,听The Hill,听Roll Call, and聽Ouest France. Grant is a 1982 graduate of Dartmouth College, and earned his Ph.D. in 1992 from Yale University.
